What do we mean by communications?
Internal communications are about making sure that everyone inside your organisation or group, including staff, committee members and volunteers, are kept up to date with what is going on in your organisation, the latest news, goals and plans, sharing thoughts and successes, and developing ideas.
External communications is about staying in touch with everyone outside your organisation. This can include people who use and benefit from your services, people with an interest in your work, funders, the local community and like-minded groups and the public in general.
Examples of things you may wish or need to share:
- How well you are doing – success stories of your work, or in raising funds.
- What you do – to make sure everyone knows what your group does.
- How people can get in touch to find out more.
- An appeal, or campaign.
- How to get involved, by donating, fundraising, or volunteering.
- Reports, for your funders to show you are working towards meeting your goals.
There are different ways to communicate. You will need to decide what will work best for your organisation. Planning your comms will help you organise your work, help you decide how much you can do in the time you have, and help you decide which methods of communicating will be best for your group.
