The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect across the EU on 25 May 2018. It replaced existing EU and UK data protection laws.
This legislation affects all organisations that hold personal data, even very small ones. If you do not comply your organisation could be fined, so it is important to be aware of your obligations and comply with the law.

The Data (Use and Access) Bill became law in 2025. It is an addition to all existing data protection legislation. It is hoped it will reduce the processing burden on charities leading to benefits particularly related to fundraising. Check out the ICO guidance for small and medium organisations.
