Shining light on U3AC (University of the Third Age in Cambridge)

Who are they?

U3AC is an independent educational charity supporting people who are no longer in full-time employment to stay curious, connected, and inspired. Established over 40 years ago, it is built on a powerful idea: that later life is a time to keep learning and to share the wealth of knowledge and experience people hold. What began as a small group has grown into a vibrant community of over 2,500 members.

At the heart of U3AC is its volunteer-led approach. Members themselves lead and shape over 300 daytime courses and activities each year, covering everything from academic subjects to hobbies and special interests. It is a place where people both teach and learn, creating a supportive and engaging environment.

Through an annual membership, individuals can access a rich programme of lectures, courses, visits, and social opportunities. Alongside this, U3AC offers a range of ‘eXtra’ groups, including cycling, film, environment, investment, walking football, and a welcoming lunch club.

With its central Bridge Street location, U3AC also provides a friendly social space for members to connect, chat, and enjoy time together over a coffee.

U3AC is a wonderful example of how learning, volunteering, and community can come together to support wellbeing, build confidence, and create lasting connections.

Looking to get involved? Why not run a course?

U3AC welcomes members who would like to share their skills, knowledge, or interests by running a course. Whether it’s a discussion group, a series of talks, or a more structured session, there are plenty of flexible ways to get involved.

The Courses Committee offers guidance every step of the way, with additional support from staff to help deliver sessions smoothly.
