Voluntary Sector Network: Data Catalogue FAQs
About the VSN Data Catalogue Project
The Voluntary Sector Network (VSN) Data Catalogue Project is a collaborative initiative aimed at mapping what data VSN organisations collect, using a shared, secure platform called NHS Futures. This project supports better data sharing, stronger funding applications, and informed decision-making across the network. This FAQ provides key information about the project, how to get involved, and why it matters.

‘Entering my organisation’s data into the data catalogue was quick and easy. There was clear guidance on how to complete each section and what information to include.’
- What is the VSN Data Catalogue Project?
The VSN Data Catalogue Project is a collaborative initiative to understand who is collecting what across the network. It uses NHS Futures, a secure online platform, to host a shared Excel-based catalogue. - What is the NHS Futures platform?
NHS Futures is a secure, private, and free online platform where the VSN Data Catalogue is hosted. It ensures data safety with built-in version control and access limited to approved VSN members. - What is the purpose of the Data Catalogue?
The catalogue helps identify what data VSN organisations collect, enabling better collaboration, stronger funding bids, and the ability to influence NHS and other stakeholders with shared insights. - Who should access and update the Data Catalogue?
Each organisation should nominate a Data Contact, who will be granted access to NHS Futures. The Data Contact is responsible for entering and maintaining their organisation’s data headings and information on their dedicated Excel tab. - How do I get access to the Data Catalogue?
Your organisation’s nominated Data Contact must request access to NHS Futures. Once approved, they can log in anytime to update their information or view data from other organisations. - What kind of data should be entered?
The Data Catalogue is not for sharing data directly, but rather for listing headings or categories of data your organisation collects (e.g., client demographics, service outcomes, referral data). - How is the information in the catalogue used?
It provides a VSN-wide overview of data practices, supporting strategic planning, shared learning, and potential data collaborations among members. - Is the Data Catalogue visible to the public or external partners?
No. Only approved members within the VSN can access the catalogue via NHS Futures. External parties cannot view or edit the data. - What are the benefits of participating?
- Understand and improve your own data practices
- Learn from others’ approaches
- Collaborate on future data projects
- Gain insight into broader sector trends
